Rüdiger Maresch was born in 1952 in Eisenstadt, Austria and lives in Vienna. He studied English and History at the University of Vienna. He is a high school teacher of English, History and Political Education at GRG 21, Ödenburger Strasse, Vienna.

As a political activist, he was involved in student movement, civic initiatives and independent teachers' unions. Between 1987 and 2001 he was a Local Councillor of the Green Party (Die Grünen) in urban disrict 9, Wien-Alsergrund.

As a member of the City (and Regional) Assembly of Vienna since April 2001, his priorities include environmental protection and traffic/mobility. Between 2002 and 2011 he worked as the Deputy Chairperson of the Viennese association “Verein Lokale Agenda 21 in Wien zur Förderung von Bürgerbeteiligungsprozessen“ (promoting public participation processes in the “Local Agenda 21“ framework).

Since 2010 (following a coalition agreement between the Social Democratic Party (SPÖ) and the Green Party (Die Grünen) in Vienna) he has chaired the Committee for Urban Development, Traffic, Climate Protection, Energy Planning and Public Participation, and acted as the Deputy Chairperson of the Committee for Environment.

His political projects range across the issues of sustainable transport, traffic calming, pedestrian zones, parking management and urban gardening.
